Friday, February 8, marked the beginning of the CIF basketball season for the Dons, who were matched up against Paraclete High School from Lancaster. Despite the pressure and school-wide anticipation surrounding the game, the team hoped to play their best. “We’re ready to come out and fight for a win,” said William Reed, sophomore center. The starting line up that night consisted of juniors Ethan Reyes, Jagger Uy and Gavin Carothers; senior Adi Suresh; and sophomore Alex Archer. From the beginning of the first quarter, it was evident that the game would be very intense – but Ethan Reyes and Alex Archer started the Dons off with a three pointer and fast break layup (respectively) one minute into the game. Adi Suresh also scored a three pointer with five seconds left in the first quarter. By halftime, the score was tied at 35-35. The second half proved to be more intense than the first one, but this time, Gavin Carothers started it off with an overhand layup. Furthermore, Reyes went on to score 25 points (21 of which were in the form of free throws) along with the efforts of Jagger Uy, Gavin Carothers, Tim Huang, Dante Burnett, Adi Suresh and the rest of the team.
The Dons ultimately ended the game with a win, the score being 71-61 after clutch shots from Ethan Reyes and Dante Burnett. “It feels great to win, and I’m happy that a lot of people could see it,” said Justin Jung, CHS senior.
